Condo Churches (Sacred Sites Transformed)

The condo church is now a convention, a "sign of the times" . . . A version of progress(?): The material replacing the spiritual . . . the contradictions of America/capitalism, an object lesson: A “Christian nation” housing its wealthy in once sacred sites . . .

Declining church attendance, diminishing influence of dioceses and religion per se . . . scarcity of housing/consolidation of physical space . . .

Sublime inspirations remain as vestiges, reduced to aesthetics: the arched windows, the heavy but graceful stone, the very setting in blue sky intimacy, on the most beautiful street in Brooklyn.

  1. That sounds amazing. I would love to see the interior of one of these--sun shining through a giant stained glass window. I wonder what they do with the rectory and convent? Real estate offices?

  2. The condo church thing--An interesting curio. Here in Picksville the old churches become bars or restaurants. I think the Church Brew Works might have been the first. I drank there a couple of times back in the gay 90's when it opened. Odd thing that. Looking up at the alter where instead of a cross now stood huge vats of brewing beer. They left the interior very church like. Pews turned to face one another with long tables in between. A fine selection of beers. Sacrilegious merriment was made by all.

  4. Interesting condo building. So would the tenants take a bath in holy water?

  5. Years ago I played a guy in tennis semi-regularly, and he lived in some church near Body Elite [Court St.]. I was over there a couple times for a beer or two. The bedroom was in the steeple, literally. Very cool place.
